Featured Thailand Golf Course

Pete Dye's Subhapruek Golf Course is probably the best public course in Bangkok featuring a plethora of great golf holes.  Dye has once again created a tough test of golf, yet playable for higher handicappers due to several options off the tee and on your approach shots.  The greens have recently been cored and sanded, but so have many courses in Bangkok, and they'll need a few more weeks before they return to their normal condition.

The caddies, while posing no threat to Steve Williams' job, are on the whole very helpful and more importantly, know how to smile after you've hit two swooping duck hooks into the water on the awesome risk-reward short Par 4 17th.  If they paid attention to the small things like keeping the bunkers raked and levelling the tee boxes, it'd be one of Bangkok's best.  However, the green fees are very reasonably at THB 900 weekdays and THB 1,200 after 12:00pm on weekends.  Caddie fees are THB 200.

- Introduced the "Fairway to Heaven" program featuring Mandara Spa's Golf Magic treatment and a Golfthink 18 hole playing lesson.  (We tested Mandara Spa's Golf Magic Treatment and haven't felt as good since Kenny G stopped making albums)

- Established the Golfthink Pro Shop.  You can now buy name-brand products directly from Golfthink.  We'll throw in a one hour golf lesson with the purchase of any clubs during June.  Befofe you make your next purchase, send us an email to proshop@golfthink.com

- Had a record-tieing 13 straight days of Thai food, only to spoil it by a day of 8 pieces of peanut butter on toast for breakfast, Burger King for lunch, followed by steak, fried eggs, onions and a mass serving of roast potatoes for dinner.

- Was on the golf course for 21 days and hence this month we're a bit short on news (see above)

My Most Memorable Golfing Moment is...
Some years ago I played with a couple of friends GC Salzkammergut in Austria.  The third hole, if I remember right, is a Par 3 with the green invisible on a hill.  I socked my tee shot (fortunately the ladies tee was quite near the men's tee other-wise it would have cost me a round of 'ladies drinks') and was lying on a quite steep slope.  Although I was never fond of uphill or downhill lies my second shot was a beauty (once the score is ruined you seem to swing easier).  We reached the green but my ball was nowhere to be seen - not much rough either - and after a short search I gave it up rather than going back to the tee.  My friends looked at me compassionately.  After the first of them sank his putt we 'found' my ball - it was in the cup, I had made a birdie without even noticing it.

The Best Thing About Golf Is...
It is the only game that makes you humble. No exceptions, even for Tiger Woods on a bad day!

The One Thing I Would Change About Golf if I Could is...
Simplify the rules for amateur golf. The only thing is not to take advantage.  Further a fellow player - you know that type 'for this I give you a penalty! - should be liable for a 2-stroke penalty if his accusation was groundless and he ruined your round.  Fortunately Asians and expecially Thais are very relaxed on the course, would just laugh at him and continue their gambling.

The Golfer I Admire the Most is...
Nick Faldo.  It seems inevitable that every professional after having peaked and won a couple of masters is in for a long career slump.  I think we are witnessing at the moment this syndrome with Tiger.  Some of them do come back strong like e.g. Tom Watson.  Nick's game was absolutely gone but he never gave up and at the moment he seems to recover nicely. I wouldn't be surprised if he has another masters in him.

Favourite Course
The obvious answer for most golfers to this question would be 'the ones I played good' which would be my favourite answer as well.  From a more professional point of view it would be Summit Windmill. Despite having a lot of water the course is fair and gives you a good chance to recover when you are in trouble.

Back by popular demand, we bring you Amazing But True Golf Facts.  This month we take a look at some US Open trivia...

- J.D Tucker shot 157 in the first round of the 1898 US Open at Myopia Hunt Club

- Shinnecock Hills (host of this years open) played at 4,423 yards for the 1896 Open.  This year it plays a Par 70 measuring 6,995.  The club was built on land that formerly belonged to the Shinnecock Indian Tribe and many Shinnecock Indians assisted in the construction of the course.

- Arnold Palmer came from a record 7 strokes back to win at Cherry Hills in 1960

- Tiger Woods blitzed the field at Pebble Beach in 2000 winning by a record 15 strokes

- Ray Ainsley took a 19 on the Par 4 16th hole at Cherry Hills in 1938

- Horace Rawlins won the first US Open in 1895 shooting 91-82 with the gutta percha ball and winning USD$150
