AUGUST 2004

Hi Kim!

Sit back, close your eyes...and imagine, if you can, a tall skinny guy dressed in a purple leotard.  He's sitting on the floor with both legs wrapped over his head.  He's slowly chanting "Ah-Ohmmm".  The incense burns.  Suddenly...A puff of smoke, and you're on the first tee of your home course.  You swing back.  Further than usual.  There's no pain.  Nor strain.  You pure it.  The ball takes off.  It keeps going - like an Energizer battery. (and going)

Now...combine those two thoughts, and you've got Yoga For Golfers.   Well not exactly, because Yoga For Golfers doesn't require you to contort your body like a rubber band, but anyway, the latest sensation to hit golf in the U.S is now available in Thailand and Asia through Golfthink.

Yoga for Golfers has been featured on The Golfchannel, Golf Digest, CNN/Sports Illustrated, USA Today, ESPN, ABC, CBS, Fox and virtually every major golf media in North America.  Visit www.golfthink.com to learn how it can help your game...and find out what Nike's getting from Tiger for $100 million...

Hope you enjoy this months read...

Kim

This month we head up country to Khao-Yai and review Forest Hills Country Club , one of many unheralded designs in the Khao-Yai area.  The Par 5 14th, Par 3 15th and Par 4th 16th are one of favourite trio's of short holes in Thailand, especially if the 15th green was half the size (it's a wedge for most players) and if they shortened the 16th to make it driveable.
The clubhouse service is adequate, what one would expect from most courses "up-country", but I think caddie training consists of two (agonising) hours watching the video "The Legend of Baggar Vance" on the Caddie Masters 29" Sony Trinitron TV.  Overall though, a very pleasant way to spend a day golfing, and reachable in about an hour and fifteen minutes (if you don't talk golf, miss the sign and drive 20km's past it).
NOTE: Forest Hills was recently the host of the PriceWaterHouse Golf League's monthly matches, where the Todd Hamilton-like Oreilly's team continued their rampant form and maintained their position at the top of the table.  Unlike some other golfers (that grace the home page of golfthink.com), their comments "We're close to putting it all together" actually have come to fruition...

Bogey - To myself for using this newsletter as a forum to whinge and complain about things that don't go my way...

Birdie - Todd Hamilton for hanging tough to win the Open and not becoming another Jean De Velde or Brian Watts...

Bogey - To the course that I know most of the staff at better than my alter ego, for demanding a 1,000 baht deposit for rental shoes.  Come to think of it, lets give them a birdie, I mean my USD$300 pair of Footjoy Classics Dry Premier are 5 years old and looking a bit shabby and I guess the word must have gotten out that I secretly have a foot fetish and was getting rather excited just thinking about taking home a $15 pair of vinyl golf shoes worn by 297 other golfers in 40 degree heat...

Birdie -  The Bangkok underground train, which is supposed to help increase the average speed of cars in Bangkok (estimated at 5-6 km/hr)

Bogey - The Bangkok underground train.  For not having enough trains running.  And they think they'll get Bangkokians out of their BMW's and Mercedes to stand like a Viagra erection amongst 18,986 other passengers...

Eagle - JW Marriott Phuket Resort and Spa for making its debut on the prestigious "World's Best Hotels Awards - Asia" 2004 published by Travel & Leisure Magazine (USA) this month.  Go Lee!

Final Hole Heroics

This month we come from a different angle and present to you:

The Honest Taxi Drivers Guide To Good Golf Course Journeys:
(As Translated From A Real Taxi Driver)
  1. Put away your nice color map you printed off the Internet because to me, all maps just look like drawings by your three year old daughter and I think you're trying to barter this for the fare.
  2. If I get lost, stopping and asking for directions, calling the golf course, or any other similar action that you might find helpful and/or logical, is completely out of the question.  We can find the course by trial and error, even if it means driving around for two hours, after which time, any course will do.  I mean, how different can they be?
  3. If I drop you off at Vinni's Jewelry, Electronics & Designer Goods Bizarre, and you want to eventually make it to your destination, it's quicker to go in and pretend you're interested rather than threaten you're going to call the tourist police
  4. It's 400 baht one way at the very most for most courses in the Bangkok area.  If I try to bargain with you for a set price, run for it - faster than a Tom Yum Kung.
  5. Whenever you hear me say "This way shortcut", kick back and have a snooze because it'll be at least another hour before we get to your destination
  6. Accelerating then braking every 1.36 seconds was on the taxi drivers practical test.  Your sarcastic comments won't make the ride any smoother.
  7. Playing Thai music as loud as the radio will go, and trying to dislodge last nights chicken feet noodles from my throat then spitting out the door is the taxi drivers rendition of "Welcome To My World"
  8. If I stop on the way and refuse to take you any further for any reason, think Nike.  (Just Do It)
  9. I'm picking my nose because someday, I'll go deep enough to find gold and not have to work 16 hour shifts.
