Dear Fellow Golfthinker!

We can't make our regular tee time this month and we thought we'd show up early rather than late.

Firstly, Congratulations to Bruce Andrews from Hong Kong who is the winner of a free playing lesson at Kiarti Thanee Country Club for playing the odds and referring 20 of his friends to this golfletter back in January.

If you're feeling lucky and want the chance to win a free round of golf at Alpine Golf & Sports Club, just forward this to five of your friends and CC: golfletter@golfthink.com.  We'll announce the winner in our July issue.

Hope you're playing some great golf and find something below to improve your game in the golf capital of Asia...

Great golfing!

Thailand Golf Course Reviews
If you're looking for the the most up-to-date and informative golf course reviews and information, check out golfthink's Pro Picks at www.golfthink.com/travel.htm  You won't find our reviews anywhere else on the web and we don't review courses that we haven't played in the last year.

You'll get inside information on all the best courses.  We admit it, it's a bit biased and even controversial, but if you really don't agree with us then you're welcome to submit your comments for review.  There are some well-known courses left off our list but not without reason.  With so many great courses in Thailand, why should you play second rate courses with second rate service?

Not-So-Famous Thailand Golf Courses
The Country Club Khao Yai is golfthink's favourite course of all time. That's right, we like it better than Blue Canyon, better than Thai Country Club and even better than famed Winged Foot Golf Club.  One of two Jack Nicklaus courses in Khao-Yai, it is now temporarily closed for renovations after the last owners turned it into a goat-track.

This course really does have 18 memorable golf holes.  The most memorable Par 3 is the 7th, tee it up from an elevated tee to a green guarded by water at the front and a step bank behind.  Club selection is difficult and with the wind blowing it's just a tough, tough golf hole.  The 18th is one of the great Par 4's in Thailand, with a fairway bunker in the middle of the fairway and a tightly protected green guarded by wastelands left and bunkers right, this one's a scorecard wrecker.  The 3rd is a superb risk-reward Par 5 with a split fairway on your approach.  It's reachable in two for longer hitters, but it's tough enough played as a three shot hole at the best of times.

There is absolutely nothing to do in Khao-Yai except play golf and amuse yourself feeding the National Park's monkeys.  Green Fees are dirt cheap, but the inside word is that the new Khao-Yai will be a little more expensive and a little exclusive.  We'll let you know when it's open because it's well worth the two and half hour drive to play this golf course.

- Pete Dye's Subhapruek Golf Course in Bangkok has an interesting 19th hole.  The 140 yard Par 3 can be used for settling bets and unhalving halved matches.

- Tipping the caddies at Navatanee Golf Course is against club regulations, so be discreet or you might get them in trouble.

- All but a few courses in Bangkok have gone to the "One Player Per Cart" rule.  The reasoning is a partly logical, but no matter how much you complain, this is one rule that you can't break.

- Thana City's six hour rounds, tee off when you're ready if you've got a spare 100 baht, shocking restaurant service and grouchy Assistant Manager is finally getting around.  Just read the reviews on thaigolfer.com or go play yourself.  On second thoughts...don't.

- Bangkok Golf Club's Par 3 course has a hole in one "pot" that sometimes gets into the six figures for the gambler in all of us.  Great idea and great little course for after your round on the Championship course and for beginners.

Coming into Thailand's hot season, this month's tip is going to seem a bit obvious, but we can't emphasize the importance of drinking enough water.  I've witnessed several casualties including one guy who stopped after 9 holes and lay down in the middle of the Pro Shop for an hour because he didn't drink enough water.  Trying to un-dehydrate (is that a word?!)  himself, he drunk about six bottles of water, two Gatorades, three Cokes and still couldn't get off the floor.

There are drinks stops every three holes at most courses in Thailand and they're there for a reason.  During the hottest of hot weather, I'll drink a bottle of water every hole.  Watch the Pro's and they'll drink water even when it's cool.  You may not be able swing a club like the Pro's but you can sure drink like them.  Become a fish and save yourself a few easy shots.
